Greece Visa Application Guide
Greece Visa Requirements from Turkiye
Greece should examine an application when it is the only Schengen destination or the principal destination based on the main purpose or longest stay. If purpose and duration are genuinely equal, the first country of entry determines competence. Ferry arrival at a Greek island, a connection through another state or an easier appointment does not override the main-destination rule.
This guide covers the official Kosmos Vize route, consular jurisdiction, application steps, documents, biometrics, timing, 90/180-day calculation, island travel and the difference between Type C and national visas. Requirements can change. Recheck the Greek mission responsible for your province and its current checklist immediately before filing.
Official Greece Visa Application Channel in Turkiye
The Greek Embassy in Ankara and Greek consular posts in Istanbul, Izmir and Edirne publish their own jurisdiction and submission instructions. The official pages state that collection of Schengen applications and biometric data has been outsourced to Kosmos Vize. Kosmos receives the file and biometrics; it does not decide the application and cannot guarantee approval.
Residents must use the route connected with the competent Greek mission for their province. Ankara's official page identifies Kosmos offices in Ankara and Gaziantep for its jurisdiction. Istanbul, Izmir and Edirne publish separate jurisdiction and centre arrangements. Do not choose a centre solely for convenience without confirming that it can accept the application.
Begin from an official `mfa.gr` page and follow the current Kosmos link. Be cautious with sponsored results, copied centre pages, appointment resellers and claims of consular access. An independent adviser may help organise information but cannot submit biometrics for the applicant, make the decision, control appointment supply or act as a Greek authority.
When Greece Is the Correct Schengen Country
If Greece is the only Schengen destination, competence is normally clear. For a trip including Greece and Italy, France or another Schengen state, identify the principal purpose first. A wedding, business meeting or family event can establish the main purpose even when some tourism nights occur elsewhere. If the purposes are the same, compare the number of nights. First entry matters only when both purpose and duration are equal.
Count nights and make the form, cover letter, accommodation, transport and insurance support the same itinerary. A traveller spending two nights in Greece and eight tourism nights in Italy will normally apply through Italy. A traveller attending a documented five-day conference in Greece followed by five tourism days elsewhere may still have Greece as the main purpose.
A Greek Schengen visa can permit travel in other Schengen states within its validity, entry count and authorised days. It does not require every journey to begin in Greece, but the application must have been truthful when filed. Keep evidence explaining any material change after issuance.
Greece Visa Application Steps
- Define the real purpose. Separate tourism, private visit, business, event, medical travel and transit from employment, study and residence.
- Confirm Greek competence. Compare the purpose and nights across all Schengen destinations.
- Find the competent Greek mission. Use the official jurisdiction list for the applicant's province of residence.
- Read the current checklist. Select the list for the exact purpose and applicant profile.
- Book through the official route. Enter identity and passport details exactly as printed.
- Build one consistent file. Dates and claims must match across every document.
- Attend the appointment. Submit documents and provide biometrics where required.
- Monitor official communication. Answer additional-document or interview requests within the stated time.
- Check the returned passport. Verify all sticker fields before travelling.
Greece Schengen Visa Documents
The precise checklist depends on purpose, passport, age, occupation, sponsor and jurisdiction. A typical short-stay file may include:
- a completed and signed Schengen application form;
- a passport meeting current age, validity, condition and blank-page rules;
- a recent photograph meeting biometric specifications;
- Schengen travel medical insurance for the full itinerary;
- realistic transport and accommodation evidence;
- a clear itinerary or purpose explanation;
- recent bank activity and evidence of regular income;
- employment, company, education, retirement or other status documents;
- purpose-specific evidence such as an invitation, event record or business letter;
- legal-residence evidence for a non-Turkish applicant filing in Turkiye;
- birth, custody and parental-consent documents where required for a minor.
The checklist is a minimum framework, not a guarantee. The authority can request further information. A concise, genuine file is preferable to a large set of irrelevant or contradictory documents. Never use altered statements, fake invitations or accommodation that cannot be verified.
Passport, Form and Photograph
The passport should satisfy the current Schengen issue-date, post-departure validity and blank-page conditions. It must be undamaged and match the name, date of birth and passport number used for the appointment and form. Old passports can explain travel history, but a prior visa does not guarantee another decision.
Complete the form truthfully. State previous refusals when asked, disclose the real payer and use the actual travel purpose. Review every date, address and contact detail before signing. The photograph should be recent and meet the size, background and face-position requirements published for the application.
Travel Medical Insurance
Short-stay applicants normally need insurance valid throughout the Schengen area for the requested trip and meeting the current minimum medical and repatriation coverage. Check the insured person's name, territory, dates and exclusions. Insurance supports one condition; it does not prove funds or guarantee entry.
Accommodation, Transport and Island Travel
Accommodation should cover every night and match the route. Host stays require the evidence requested by the checklist. Ferry, domestic flight and island connections should be realistic. A day trip from the Turkish coast, a multi-island holiday and an Athens itinerary can have different transport evidence.
Do not assume that an island visit is automatically visa-free or covered by a temporary port scheme. Limited island programmes can have separate nationality, port, duration and application conditions and may change. A local island permission is not the same as a reusable Schengen visa. Verify the current Greek MFA and port instructions for the exact trip.
Financial Evidence and Sponsorship
Bank statements should show normal activity, accessible travel funds and a credible income source. A large last-minute deposit should be explained with evidence. Salary, pension, business or another income should correspond to the declared status and planned budget. Property documents can support general circumstances but do not replace usable travel funds.
If another person pays, include a sponsorship declaration, identity, relationship, income and financial records. The applicant's own circumstances and temporary intention remain relevant. A sponsor should not be used to hide unexplained funds or an inconsistent purpose.
Purpose-Specific Greece Visa Evidence
Tourism
A tourism file should explain why Greece is the main destination, the intended cities or islands, accommodation and transport. A concise day-by-day plan should be personal and realistic. Avoid generic text copied from a website or another traveller.
Family or Friend Visit
A private visit should identify the host, relationship, Greek address, legal status, accommodation and payment arrangements. Provide the invitation and supporting identity or residence evidence required by the checklist. An invitation supports the claimed purpose but does not replace the applicant's financial and return circumstances.
Business, Fair or Conference
A business file should connect the Turkish employer or company, Greek inviting organisation, applicant's role, meeting or event dates and expense responsibility. A short meeting does not authorise ordinary employment. Work activity requires the appropriate permission.
Medical, Cultural and Sports Travel
Medical travel can require appointment, treatment, cost and payment evidence. Cultural and sports travel can require organiser invitations, schedules and the participant's role. Dates in the invitation, accommodation, insurance and transport should align.
Airport and Territorial Transit
Transit requirements depend on nationality, airport, route, terminal changes, baggage and whether border control is crossed. Check each segment with the airline and official authorities. Leaving the international zone or taking a domestic/Schengen onward flight can require a short-stay visa rather than only an airport transit visa. Review the transit visa guide.
Biometrics and Personal Appearance
Applicants generally appear to submit fingerprints and a photograph unless a current exemption applies. Greek official information notes that applications can sometimes be submitted through accredited agencies where fingerprints were recorded in VIS within the previous 59 months, but the mission may still request personal appearance or fresh biometrics. Children under the applicable fingerprint age and persons physically unable to provide fingerprints have specific rules.
Biometrics confirm identity; they are not an approval score. The centre cannot decide whether previous fingerprints will be reused, whether an interview will be requested or whether the visa will be issued.
Greece Visa Timing and Fees
Under the current common Schengen framework, applications can generally be lodged up to six months before travel and should normally be filed at least 15 days before departure. Some older Greek pages still show the former three-month window or older 30/60-day extensions. The current Visa Code framework normally uses a 15-calendar-day decision period with possible extension to 45 days. Confirm current local instructions before filing.
Appointment waiting, file transfer and passport delivery are separate from examination. Begin early for summer, holiday and island seasons. Avoid non-refundable purchases before a decision unless the current checklist specifically requires a paid item.
The official Schengen fee and the provider's separate service charge can change by age, category, exemption and currency conversion. Optional courier, SMS or premium services do not improve the authority's assessment. Verify amounts and accepted payment methods on the responsible Greek mission and Kosmos pages.
Type C, National Visa and Residence
A Type C visa covers temporary visits of up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across Schengen. Work, degree study, family reunification and residence require a Greek national visa and, where applicable, further permits. The Ankara mission states that national-visa applicants contact the consular office directly for category instructions and an appointment.
A tourism application must not conceal employment or settlement. A conference differs from paid work; a short course differs from a degree programme; visiting relatives differs from family reunification. Select the correct category before booking.
The Rolling 90/180-Day Rule
The 90/180 rule is calculated across the entire Schengen area. On each day of presence, count all Schengen days during the previous 180 days. Travel from Greece to Italy or France does not reset the count. A multi-year multiple-entry visa can allow repeated journeys, but never unlimited residence.
Read the sticker carefully. The validity period, number of entries and duration of stay are separate limits. A visa valid for several months may authorise far fewer days. Overstay can affect departure, penalties and future applications.
Visa Sticker and Border Entry
When the passport is returned, verify the name, passport number, validity dates, entry count, authorised days and any territorial limitation. Contact the issuing authority promptly if a detail is wrong. Do not assume an airline or border officer will overlook an error.
A visa does not guarantee admission. Border officers may ask for accommodation, purpose, funds, insurance and return or onward travel. Keep copies available. If the itinerary changes after issuance, retain evidence showing that the original application was truthful and explaining the new circumstances.
Refusal, Review and Reapplication
A refusal notice identifies the relevant reasons and available appeal or review information. Read the authority, deadline, language and fee instructions carefully. A private adviser cannot promise a successful appeal.
Before reapplying, identify the unresolved point. It may concern competence, purpose, funds, reliability, insurance, return intention or missing evidence. Correct the underlying issue and disclose the refusal where requested. Repeating the same file immediately is unlikely to change the assessment.
Common Greece Visa Mistakes
- using Greece only because another Schengen country has no appointment;
- choosing a centre outside the applicant's consular jurisdiction;
- calling the Greek provider VFS instead of following the current Kosmos route;
- confusing first entry with the main-destination rule;
- submitting conflicting form, hotel, ferry, insurance and leave dates;
- presenting unexplained recent transfers as the main proof of funds;
- treating a temporary island scheme as a general Schengen visa;
- hiding work, study or residence plans inside tourism;
- paying an appointment seller or relying on an approval promise;
- assuming a multiple-entry visa permits unlimited days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Turkish citizens need a visa for Greece?
Turkish ordinary-passport holders generally need a Schengen visa for a short visit. Other Turkish passport types may have short-stay exemptions that must be checked for the exact activity.
Where are Greece visa applications submitted in Turkiye?
Greek missions state that Schengen applications and biometrics are collected through Kosmos Vize, with the correct centre depending on consular jurisdiction. Some missions also publish direct consular appointment options or specific exceptions.
Is Greece the correct country if it is the first entry?
Not automatically. The main purpose and longest stay come first. First entry applies only when purpose and duration are equal.
How long does a Greece visa decision take?
The common framework normally provides 15 calendar days, with possible extension to 45 days. Appointment waiting and passport delivery should be added.
Can a Greek visa be used in other Schengen countries?
It can permit travel within Schengen subject to its validity, entries and authorised days, provided Greece was the correct country to assess the application.
Does an island trip use the same rules?
A normal Schengen visa can cover island travel, but a temporary port or island programme can have a separate and limited scope. Verify the exact route and date through official Greek information.
Can an application centre approve or accelerate the visa?
No. The external provider can receive appointments, documents, payments and biometric data within its authorised role, but the competent Greek authority assesses and decides the application. Optional lounge, courier, notification, form-filling or premium services do not change the legal criteria and cannot purchase a favourable result. Applicants should keep control of their own email address, telephone number, passport information and appointment account, and should retain the submission receipt and a copy of the complete file.
